Research and Development

Progress comes from the intelligent use of experience.
E. Hubbard

plant breeding

Our major concern lies on the selection and breeding of the established saline crops : Salicornia and Aster tripolium lines as well as the new crops under investigation.

Aster tripolium : selection trials

new crop development
New crops have been established and are waiting for up scaling or are still under investigation : Salsola, Crithmum, Beta maritima, Spergularia, Crambe ..

diversification

Different applications in "animal feed" , "environmental issues" or "cosmetics" are considered.

cultivation

Several types of cultivation technologies have been built up for open soil cultures and greenhouse cultures.

mechanisation

Cultures were established in natural saline soils or artificial systems (hydroponics)
Automation in harvesting sea vegetables has been setup.

halophytes
a term referring to the native flora of saline soils. Halophytes resist concentrations up to 35 g salt/l (sea water)

aquaponics
is the combination of hydroponics (hydroculture of specific crops) together with aquaculture systems. Aquaponics is already applied with fresh water aquaculture systems like "tilapia" culture.

aquaculture
sustainable recirculation systems is an important topic in aquaculture. The cultivation of saline crops can be integrated in effluent re-use of "saline" aquaculture plants. Through aquaponics we investigate closed recirculation systems in shrimp aquaculture.

phytoremediation
halophytes are known to accumulate salts in a less selective manner. Studies revealed that halophytes accumulate heavy metals in polluted saline areas. Saline crops are tools for phytostabilisation or phytorestoration in salt affected and polluted areas.

saline crops
a number of halophytic crops with potential as cash crops

sea vegetables
a number of saline vegetable crops that are known as delicacies in modern cuisine. We recognize Salicornia, Sea aster , Salsola but also Sea beet, Sea fennel, Sea kale...
